Located at the foot of Ecuador´s highest volcano, Estrella del Chimborazo, also known as Chimborazo Base Camp, is perfect for acclimatisation before ascending the 6310m snow-covered peak of Chimborazo or nearby Carihuayrazo.

The Refuge is part guesthouse, part museum. Each wall, mantelpiece, shelf and table are covered with photos, relics from the surrounding indigenous communities and assorted climbing paraphernalia. Guests are invited to borrow a pair of cosy rabbit fur slippers, lined up neatly on the shelves by the entrance.

The main building houses the restaurant and comfortable lounge area, arranged around a huge fireplace. Large windows make the most of the views of the harsh paramo landscape and surrounding volcanoes.

Two cabins each contain four double rooms and two spotless bathrooms. Guests can wake up to the sunrise over the mountains.

"Estrella del Chimborazo" is the name of a species of hummingbird endemic to the paramo, and lucky guests might spot one of these tiny birds flitting around the cabins.

No minimum stay policy

All waste is removed from the park and disposed of in Riobamba.
There are filters for the waste water.

All guides are local and indigenous. Some staff are from the local communities.
Horses are rented out to the local communities for tourism.
The refuge is next to Casa del Condor - a local indigenous community which works with CORDTUCH. Some community tours are available through the Estrella del Chimborazo Tour Operator - Expediciones Andinas.
